Nine: Counting Chupacabras Debut

I stood under the cover of night behind the fence encircling the abandoned grain silos. A keep out sign hung within my line of sight, but I stared past it to the field of overgrown weeds and wildflowers that tangled around rusted steel beams.

I had parked my car further away so as not to attract the attention of passersby. Reluctantly, I concealed my bag under the passenger seat and locked all the doors. The silos seemed like a likely place to lose valuable items while traversing the dangerous terrain. Blocks of cement the size of cars littered the surrounding area.

Within the center of a dilapidated landscape, confined by Chicago’s industrial area, massive concrete cylinders stretched up towards the sky as though they intended to block out the skyline. They towered hundreds of feet in the air next to a square, fifteen-story building. The building’s rotting walls held broken windows, chunks of rusting rebar, all ringed by a steel ribbon which was entirely covered by graffiti. I shuddered at the idea of finding a route to the top of the sheer cement walls where the art was prominently displayed. I slid through a hole in the fence. Ivy writhed its way up the brick outbuilding before me.

“I just know something bad is going to happen,” I mumbled to myself as I wilted under the menacing structure before me. Their sheer size and scale commanded attention, standing as relics of an era when they played a vital role in the city's economy. Rising high above the surroundings, these imposing cylindrical structures were a network of interconnected silos, their exteriors weathered by time and elements. The concrete surfaces bore signs of wear and weathering, with patches of rust and fading paint hinting at their age and years of service. The eerie quiet was enhanced as a steady wind swept through the trees.

I found a hole in the crumbling concrete wall of the silo that was large enough for me to squeeze through. I turned on the flashlight on my phone to examine my surroundings. Colorful graffiti decorated the decaying structure. Rusting metal and peeling paint seemed far starker with the street art as juxtaposition.

The air was stale and musty, carrying with it a faint scent of dampness and decay. As I ventured further, I found myself entangled in a labyrinth of dark corridors and open spaces. The silence was broken only by eerie echoing sounds through the vast liminal spaces. I found remnants of the building’s former use while I navigated the maze-like space – rusty machinery, discarded conveyor belts, and old grain residue. The surreal feeling of having stepped into a forgotten world filled me with unease.

Intermittently I encountered a ladder leading toward the top of the silos. An invitation I promptly declined. I had no interest in being in this ominous structure, much less climbing up to a terrifying height. The mission was simply to see if there were any clues regarding Ari. Some trace as to when or why she had come here.
